Character: Diefenbaker

Diefenbaker, a half-wolf who is purportedly deaf and can read lips (English and Inuit) was born in the wild and was found by Fraser from an abandoned mine shaft. In turn, he saved Fraser from a frozen river. He has a strong sense of self, he loves junk food and is a loyal and experienced companion. He had three puppies with a Husky named Maggie.

Some people have come up with a theory that Dief is actually Fraser's alter ego, manifesting many traits and cravings he denies from himself. Diefenbaker melted everyone's hearts both on-screen and off, and was reported at one point to have received more fanmail than any of the human actors of the series.

The dog actors and actresses

Diefenbaker was played by several Huskies. Lincoln played the role during the first two seasons, and Draco continued after that. They were both purebred Siberians. The name for this fanlisting comes from a quote by Fraser talking to a psychologist from the episode "Hawk and a Handsaw". "Well, yes, there's my wolf. Although I'm not sure he would vouch for me. If you know anything about lupine behavior, you know how moody they are and on top of that, he's deaf."
