About John Howe
John Howe was born in August 21st 1957 in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada where he also grew up. He then moved to France where he first studied in a college and then at the Écoles des Arts Decoratifs de Strasbourg. He now lives in Neuchatel, Switzerland with his wife Fataneh (who is also an illustrator) and their son Dana.
John Howe is best known for his Tolkien illustrations which include books, posters, maps and calendars as well as working in the creative team of Peter Jackson's LOTR trilogy along with Alan Lee. Among his other cherished art are the cover illustrations for Robin Hobb's books. John Howe has also contributed to the design of the film adaptation of the Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. His other illustrations include (but are not limited to) Beowulf, books by G.R.R. Martin, Guy Gavriel Kay, Garry Kilworth, Charles de Lint and Robert Holdstock. He has a special interest in medieval armoury, a knowledge that was of great help during his work in the LOTR trilogy.
I higly recommend you to visit his official site for more information, latest news and samples of his breathtaking art.
Why this fanlisting
John Howe has been my favourite Tolkien illustrator since 1995 when I was first introduced to his paintings through that year's Tolkien wallcalendar. I was specifically amazed by his knack at using strongly contrasting colours: red flames agains black smoke, black horses against white foam and the almost photorealistic blades of grass and raindrops. Being a huge Tolkien fan, I was delighted to hear that he would be participating in the design work for the films. After seeing the documentaries and discovering his website I also started to appreciate his humour, graciousness and verbal wit. By that time I had also fallen in love with Robin Hobb's worlds - and to my great joy John Howe has illustrated most of her books too!
