About
history
Irish coffee originated somewhere between 1939 and 1945 when air travel from America to Ireland was a cold and damp experience. Brendan O'Regan of the Foynes catering service believed that the passengers would enjoy something stronger than the usual cup of coffee at their arrival and so the head Chef Joseph Sheridan developed the drink. how to make it
There are lots of variations of this drink (see links) but here are the basics.
- 1 measure (3 cl) of Irish Whiskey
- 1 teaspoon of raw sugar (or the measure you prefer)
- 1 heaped desertspoon of whipped fresh cream
- hot strong coffee
- pre-warmed stemmed glass
Pour in the whiskey, add the sugar and then the coffee to within one inch of top. Stir gently. Float the whipped cream on top using a spoon. The cream shouldn't form strong heaps, whip it lightly! Do not use silly green decorations on top of the cream, but a pinch of chocolate powder can't hurt anyone. ;)
Drink the coffee through the cream, do not stir it after adding the cream! Enjoy. :)
