Puddleglum is a Marsh-wiggle and has a major role in The Silver Chair where he accompanies Jill and Eustace on their quest to find Prince Rillian, but also appears in the Last Battle.
He has a long thin face, sunken cheeks, tightly shut mouth, sharp nose, no beard, large ears, greeny-grey hair with each lock flat rather than round and very long legs and arms with fingers webbed like a frog's. His body isn't much bigger than a dwarf's, but he is taller than most men. He wears loose earth-coloured clothes and a high, pointed hat with an enormously wide flat brim.
The marsh where Puddleglum lives is located south of the Ettinsmoor and of the river Shribble. It is a great flat plain with countless channels of water, little islands and birds.
Marsh-wiggles live in wigwams, take life seriuosly and like privacy. They smoke a strange, heavy sort of tobacco, some say that they mix it with mud. The smoke from their pipes trickles out of the bowl and drifts along the ground.
